7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Pakistan on 18th Jan

Very Near the borders of Iran and Afghanistan, an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude rocked Pakistan on late Tuesday, Jan 18, 2011. The heavy intensity of the quake shuddered India's capital Delhi, Jaipur and Dehradun and trembling felt in Dubai area also.

The temblor that occurred at around 2 am, jolted important of the major cities in the region, including Karachi, Quetta and Multan and strong tremors were felt in Lahore also.

According to reports, houses were damaged in Quetta area, capital city of Balochistan province.
Several houses collapsed or were damaged. But no casualties have been reported yet.

Pakistan faced the wrath of nature before the present as the massive flood paralised the entire nation and caused heavy loss.

Chennai: Continues Rain, Death Toll Reaches 150

Continuous 3 days rain in Chennai city. The people still inside of the house. More than 150 people were killed in heavy rains in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, Dec 5, 2010.

The low pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal created heavy rains and flood like situation in Tamil Nadu. The weather department said that the rain will continue on Monday, Dec 6, 2010 as a fresh low pressure trough has formed in Bay of Bengal.

Government officials said that schools and educational institutions in Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Trichy and in some other affected areas will remain closed on Monday.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as heavy rain expected in coming hours. The death toll is expected to increase. Most of the death were due to electrocution, wall collapses, lightning and drowning in flood waters.

Karthigai Deepam (கார்த்திகை தீப திருவிழா) - 2010

Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights, celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthigai in English November 21th 2010. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Karthigai month which coincides with Krithikai star.

It is celebrated in a special manner in Thiruvannamalai. Lord Shiva asks Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to find out the exact location of his head and his feet.


On this day, people clean the houses. In the evening, they draw kolams (rangoli) in the front of the house and also place some lamps on it. The lamps(Agal) are placed in the pooja and lighted.

கார்த்திகையன்று கிடைக்குமோ கிடைக்காதோ என்று, முந்திய நாளே ஓலை வாங்கிவைத்துவிடுவோம். அதைச் சுத்தம்செய்து, அரையடி நீளத்துக்கு வெட்டி வைத்துக்கொள்வோம். அதில் தயாரித்த மாவை வைத்து பனையோலை நாரினால் கட்டி, இட்லிப் பாத்திரத்தில் வைத்து,வேகவைத்து எடுப்பார்கள். இந்தக் கொழுக்கட்டையின் மணம் மிகவும் அருமையாக இருக்கும்.
